Dr. Smith is Advisor for Talent and Leadership Development at the University of Tennessee, Office of the President. He is Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM) and President Emeritus of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania (SRU). His leadership at both institutions led to significant turnarounds resulting in national commendations and rankings for both educational achievements and organizational performance. He is credited with refocusing the UTM vision resulting in resolving accreditation concerns and leading to the highest retention and graduation rates in the University’s history. He secured funding and approval for a new science and engineering building, to be the largest new academic facility in more than 40 years. In his final years at SRU, the university was recognized with three national and two regional “Best Places To Work” accolades and achieved all-time enrollment, retention, and graduation records. Dr. Smith is also a nationally recognized specialist in leadership development, teaching in university-sponsored executive development programs in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas. He holds a Ph.D. from Temple University and an Honorary Doctorate in Letters from Rajasthan Vidyappeth University in Udaipur India. Active as a community volunteer, Dr. Smith serves on the Board of Trustees for the Butler Health System (PA), and served as Board Chair, Leadership Pittsburgh; Trustee for Butler County Community College; Board Member, Butler County Development Corporation and Slippery Rock Economic Development Corporation; and past President of the Butler Rotary Club. Dr. Smith and his wife reside in Franklin, Tennessee.
